Amy Adams is set to star in much-anticipated movie Nightbitch, with the absolutely legendary tagline: “motherhood is a b*tch”. And the trailer has just dropped – with a mixed response.

Adapted from the novel by Rachel Noder – as well as being adapted for screen and directed by Marielle Heller – the project not only tells a very female-oriented story, but the entire producing team is made up of women. We love to see it.

Amy plays the protagonist, whose maternal instinct begin to manifest in canine form. Marielle has spoken out about how the story made her “feel seen”.

“Rachel Yoder’s book took my breath away. I haven’t felt this way about [a] book since I read The Diary of a Teenage Girl many years ago,” director Marielle Heller said in a statement. “Rachel’s darkly hilarious tale of motherhood and rage made me feel seen."

Here's everything we know so far about Amy Adams' upcoming film Nightbitch – including our take on a very exciting batch of first look pics and the trailer.

Nightbitch plot

The film's official synopsis reads: “Nightbitch tells the story of a woman thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a canine.

“As her symptoms intensify, she struggles to keep her alter-canine-identity secret. Finally jolted to action after an impulsive and disastrous encounter with the family cat, she seeks a cure for her condition in a herbal multi-level marketing scheme, a group of mommies all inexplicably named Jen, and Wanda White, a mysterious academic specialising in ‘mythical ethnography.’"

Could this role lead to an Oscar win for Amy Adams? We are certainly seated to find out.

It's such a clever premise, leaning into the animalistic instincts and isolation that come with motherhood – we can't wait to see Amy tackle this.

Nightbitch trailer

Many have been surprised by the lighter tone shown in the trailer, with one critic particularly concerned about the departure from the book's vibe.

“I thought they are making a dark psychological drama, leaning into the tone of the book. This trailer suggests comedy which I didn’t expect at all tbh,” they wrote. Another posted their surprise at the tone, thinking it would be more offbeat: “this whole time i thought the tone of the movie was gonna be the opposite of this they needed yorgos lanthimos”.

One fan, though, expressed their excitement at seeing director Marielle Heller take on the story: “Marielle Heller’s one of our great working directors, let’s goooooo”.

Nightbitch first look pictures

We've got a great taster of what to expect from Nightbitch after Vanity Fair dropped some first look pictures.

Amy Adams couldn't be more perfect for this role, as we see the maternal and more feral instincts of her character in these previews – including more than one picture of her hanging out with some cute-looking dogs, no doubt picking up on their energy.

The first look also shows Amy's character looking pretty isolated… we can't wait to delve into her psyche when the film comes out.
